Quite chuffed that Obama won the US election. Much like the Labour victory in the federal elections here a while back, I can kid myself that the world will be a better place... for about 8 minutes LOL!

Was there a horse race on?
Managed to spend the week prior to Melbourne Cup with a weird throat infection which migrated from one side to the other, with sore swollen glands to boot. Nice. Over the weekend Freya & I both came down with a cold & were heaps of fun to be around. More Goblin powered vehicle training which went OK, I had a ride in one of the vehicles which was quite fun. They are surprisingly noisy as your head is quite close to the rear wheel and the fairing sounds like a gigantic wobble board.
Spent the day at home with Freya on Wednesday, went to the Drs and found that she had an ear infection. Dr No-Antibiotics prescribed some antibiotics, and she improved quickly, although she spent Thursday home with Reb. Twas a fairly pleasant day on the whole.
Thursday night was a Goblin powered vehicle session at one of the velodromes... turned out to be a fairly good venue and a good session.
Suffering some mind trauma with the end of year program at school... roll on the holidays.

How frustrating...
Another fairly pleasant day at home, but for a couple of frustrations. I wanted to make some biscuits this morning, and it turned into a bit of a disaster. The "basic biscuit" recipe in the Edmonds cookbook turned out to be pretty hideous. It was super-dry and not very tasty, and it took me about a million goes before I could roll it out reasonably well. Afte rmuch grinding of teeth and muttered curses, eventually I ended up with these pale, dessicated and rather unappetizing things. Reb suggested that I ice them, so I did (lemon icing, because I was feeling bitter LOL) and they turned out OK. I called them "frustration biscuits".
Second item of frustration... the camera has decided to be dead again today. Grrr.
Made some lemonade which was well yummy.
Freya was quite amusing last night... she took a while to go to sleep, and when I went in she was lying across her pillow, cuddling her big pink pig. I moved the pig, and gently pulled her legs around. She stirred a bit but then went straight to sleep.
She ended up in our bed about 3 am, and was a wriggly worm. In her sleep she said "wet hands!" and "no I don't want to!" and laughed a bit as well... funny wee chick.
Hot day today, mid to high twenties. Lots of pollen is giving me a bit of hay fever. The garden is looking nice (apart from the GIGANTIC weeds), all the trees have lots of flowers, the grasses are big & bushy, and the succulents out the front are completely covered in pink blossoms. Very nice.

Funny old day.
Bit of a strange day today. There is some back-story which I will hopefully get around to filling in with some retrospective posting, but the short version is that over the last few weeks a couple of things happened which were kinda annoying.
The first was that Freya lost one of her toys, a funny little dog that she had picked up at one of the op shops. It was only 50c or something so we could hardly say no! Anyway, it turned into the toy of the week, and even had a name (Rosie) within about an hour! Rosie went everywhere, going to creche every day, and then... DISASTER!!! It was really strange actually. Rosie was on the dining room table one minute, and gone the next. Freya didn't seem to know where she was, although she wasn't very upset we couldn't find her, which was probably a bit odd. We looked more and more as the days passed, and eventually resigned ourselves to Rosie turning up at random in the distant future. Perhaps stray black hole from the LHC had gobbled her up. Then this morning we heard a commotion, and Freya yelled "I found Rosie!" and sure enough, there she was in her spotty glory. Freya had put her in an old teapot "because she was scared" or something like that! We were all very pleased to find her again. Next time I've lost something I'll remember to check Reb's old teapot.
The other tragedy was that our lovely digital camera bit the dust. Freya loves to use it (she actually has the hang of pointing it and pressing the button) and she brought it to show me what she had done. Unfortunately, it slipped out of her hands and whacked down on the tiles, and promptly went dead. It had a couple of moments of activity (which I thought were just death throes) as it managed to retract the lens before shutting down again. It sat forlornly on my desk for a week or two, and then today I was just about to get medieval on it with my fine screwdrivers when I though I should check it again, and bling, on it goes. I took some pictures and it all seems to be OK... fingers crossed it will stay that way.
Apart from those weird happenings it was a pretty good day. Reb is somewhat housebound due to being on after-hours support, so we did heaps of gardening and tidying, and we both played with Freya and read lots of books. Washed Bomb and picked up the patched tyre from the garage. Nice not to be rushing around trying to do too many things!

Long time, no blog...
The school holidays have dried up and blown away like old ear wax. Many exciting things to be blogged about...

That worked rather well
Was due to head off to goblin powered vehicle training today but the weather was inclement and the goblins were not organized. Instead I stayed home and made lunch. I fancied an omelet but and found a couple of recipes online. This one looked promising, but I liked the thought of the rosemary in this one. Made a double-triple recipe to feed us all. Actually worked really well & was very tasty!

Getting close to nature...
Yesterday Freya & I drove up to Tracy's so Boog & Charley could play a bit, and we went for a walk up to the local park to feed the ducks. While they were feeding them I went to shelter from the wind by one of the bizarre concrete structures so I could phone Reb. Unfortunately a duck was perched on top of it, and it doused my hand with a big warm white splash of duck poo. My extremely authentic A & F jacket and my poor new phone were liberally spattered with it. Not happy! Fortunately there was a robot killer cyber loo nearby, so I managed to clean up fairly well. Bleugh I say.
The rest of the evening went much better, Freya had a great time playing with the other kids and cautiously playing with Nala the crazy kitten.

Fairly happy holidays
My mid year holidays are officially 3/4 over, and next week I'll be back at Mt Doom SC trying to learn those kids good. I had lots planned for these holidays, but there was one minor flaw in my plan... the biblical plagues which rained down on our heads as soon as the holidays dared to rear their heads. Freya had a cold for much of the first week, and there was a plague of conjunctivitis at creche, so she stayed home with me for most of the first week and on Monday this week. It took me a while to get back into the swing of full time Boogie wrangling, but we ended up having lots of fun. We went to the Dr a couple of times for various things and she was really well behaved. She ended up getting conjunctivitis anyway, but that has cleared up fairly quickly.

Freya is quite fond of the cats at the moment, and is always giving them nice cuddles. A few days ago she picked Grom up, which was rather cute, and one night Freya went to sleep with Grom curled up on her bed. Previously whenever Gromit went into her room Freya would yell "Grom! No!".
Today Freya had a marshmallow and she said "they're wonderfully squishy".
I've also managed to get a few things done around the place... gave the yards a good mowing and weed whack. andbutchered pruned the citrus trees, hoping to get rid of the citrus gall wasps. Started to have a go at fixing up the old dressers that we have scrounged, and have been flogging off some unwanted items on ebay like our old clothes drier which never saw much use & isn't very eco-friendy. I've been putting some really junky stuff on freecycle as well.
Bought a new mobile phone a couple of weeks ago... it's an older model but still has a fairly good set of features. Nice to take photos of Freya with.
Exhumed my pig head one more time... all the soft tissue basically fell off. I was quite surprised to see that a spider was living in the skull cavity while it was underground, feeding on the wee bugs that were chowing down on the gooey tissue.

There have been a few big blowflies buzzing sluggishly around, probably thanks to my ghoulish experiments, so I have been chucking them into the spiderwebs. Evil Blackie the somethingth is quite lively, even though it's mid winter, and she is looking rather imposing.

Quick review 2: The Mist (movie)
I read The Mist once in 1990, and I have always thought it was a brilliant story, and would have loved to see it made into a good film. It's a great story, both as a scary science fiction / horror and as a thoughtful piece about human behaviour in extreme circumstances. I was quite excited to read that the story was being filmed, and even more so when the reviews came back very positive, although there was talk of a "shocking ending" which was obviously different to the novella's ambiguous one.
So, tonight (in celebration of the end of the semester) I brought the DVD home for some serious veging. I was impressed - it's a really faithful, and really good adaption of the novel. Every aspect of it - the claustrophobic nature of the situation, the disintegration of civilization in the face of a mysterious, apocalyptic event - was done perfectly. And then we get to the ending.
There are a couple of things wrong with the ending. It has been praised for being not a typical Hollywood ending, which is kinda stupid considering that Stephen King rarely writes Hollywood endings. While the novella's ending is ambiguous, the film's new ending is very bleak, which I am OK with, after all the movie is basically about the end of the world. I would have vomited blood it it was the kind of schmaltz that Spielberg wrecked War of the Worlds with. What annoyed me about that aspect of it is that it's a cheap cliche in horror movies. Oh, what a relief, the hero has made it to the end of the movie. Rooaar! The monster's little brother is hiding in the back seat and leaps at him. Roll credits. IT'S A CLICHE.
Why I hate the ending Part Deux (contains a big spoiler for the movie here). After the bleak ending, the mist is clearing, and the good old US army are restoring order and the American way of life. OMG, it was all for nought. They should have stayed in the supermarket all along, it wasn't really the end of the world. Bet you feel a bit silly now! There are two aspects of this I hate: that the whole premise of the movie is diminished is EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING. The second, huge, gag inducing one is that it STINKS, like a bloated maggotty dead water buffalo in a manure pit on a hot day, of being some post-September 11 American military propaganda exercise. Don't you worry about the end of the world, my fellow Americans. The military will save you. What seems like a tactless piece of propaganda diminishes the whole film. My advice is to press the stop button on the DVD just after they see the really big monster towards the end of the film. Then you will have seen the best of it which is pretty close to Stephen King's original story.

Quick review 1: Pushing Ice, by Alistair Reynolds
Oh that I could be like my erstwhile Nanowrimo writing buddy Filthy and vent my spleen in the most creatively offensive manner on the intarweb. Alas for me, and fortunately for you Gentle Reader, I can't quite carry that off, so here is the first of my somewhat cranky but nonetheless fairly polite reviews.
First, Pushing Ice, which is a book of the Science Fiction kind. Although it's a somewhat enjoyable read if you're into this genre, overall it is a sloppy, lazy piece of work. It feels like it was cobbled together - there's about 80% of a decent story in there, but it is marred by a whole lot of stupidly unbelievable character development (if that's the correct term) and gaping plot holes, especially relating to the motivations and actions of some of the alien races encountered in the story.
Although I enjoyed The Prefect, on the whole this is putting me off Alistair Reynolds.

Welcome to the House of Snot
We are all coughing and spluttering with some mid winter cooties and lurgi and stuff at the moment. Freya was a bit sick on Thursday, we thought it was pneumonic plague or perhaps dutch elm disease, so I took the day off to look after her. I needed to go to school to get some stuff (such as the answer sheet to the exam I will get around to marking shortly...) and Freya charmed everyone by being really quiet and hiding behind my legs. Once she had got the idea of talking to people she was better, when one of the other teachers popped in to talk to me she said "I'm Freya!".
Today we all have come down with the same sort of lurgi, and have taken it fairly easy, although I traipsed across half of Melbourne or perhaps Australia to pick up a funky wee bedside table for Freya's room that we got off ebay.
Glad that it's the shortest day this weekend... these dark mornings are a bit tedious.

Funny chick...
The other night I was walking down the hall and I pulled Freya's door closed, thinking she was asleep. "Hey!" she yelled, as the room went dark, "you just wrecked my room!"
Wisdom of Freya...
Conversations with Freya are a bit challenging at the moment... they tend to go along the lines of "you are the poo poo poohead, wee wee poo poo wee wee." Sometimes we get a haiku:
"Wee wee poo poo poo,
Poo poo wee wee poo poo poo,
Poo poo poo wee wee."
The other popular lines are "you're not my friend anymore" and "you're not coming to my party", which are also fairly charming!
Today she had a birthday party for one of the creche kids & went in full fairy regalia. A good time was had by all, but in the afternoon she was pretty wrecked and manic. We had a good conversation in the bath: "My butt is where poo comes out of." "What are your ears for?" I asked. "For getting earwigs out of them!" What is your mouth for? "Chewing!". What is your nose for? "Sniffing!" What are your eyes for? "Blinking!". Shortly after that we went to bed and she recited almost a whole storybook word-for-word, clever chick.

Whoosh whoosh... scritch scritch... rustle rustle...
Which is the amazing amount of sound I can hear after having my ears syringed today. Over the last couple of weeks my left ear had been getting a bit blocked up, and then over the last few days it got really bad. I imagined that I might have something cool and exotic like glue ear or perhaps the Black death, but when I went to the Dr he reported that my ears were well waxy, and proceeded to chisel them free using a diamond tipped drill and a small quantity of TNT. Now I can hear bats using sonar in the botanic gardens. The only disappointment is that lately I had been thinking I was moving really quietly like some sort of ninja, or perhaps even a Gideon. Alas, it was not so.

The Gods of Scrounging smile upon me once more...
A couple of nights ago I spied a filing cabinet outside the Drs across from the local ubermart... had a look & it looked nice, 4 drawers, 2 high. I went back later with my trolley and it was still there, so I whisked it home. Today I put it all together, and with Reb's help I maneouvred it into the dungeon where it fits nicely between the old file cabinet and the Ikea shelf. W00t!!! Now I have no excuse not to be tidy!
Then I was cruising around the hard rubbish tonight, checking out some interesting furniture (but not really something I wanted) when I came across a PC in a funky looking case. It had a graphics card with TV out on it (have been thinking about a Myth TV box) and so I took it home. Turns out it is an AMD64 processor, with 512 MB of DDR400 RAM. Has hard drive & all the works... rather odd, wonder if it's blown up. I will let it dry out and then have a look at it when I have a moment.

Why black house spiders rock
Today I was doing some laundry and I came across a big cockroach on the floor. I caught it and lobbed it into Blackie's web. Usually the cockroaches wriggle out, and I think the spiders are a bit hesitant to have a go at something that big. Today, however, Blackie was very keen, perhaps due to the onset of Autumn.

Tired girl
Reb's folks have departed for the west. Freya had a lovely time chatting with Grams, Gramps & Uncle William. Yesterday she was home sick from creche, she was boiling hot in the morning and shivering, poor chick. Reb stayed home & looked after her. This morning she was much better, and we dropped her off at creche and went to work.
This afternoon I got to creche, when one of the carers told me a funny story about how Freya was talking about her "sister Leah", who is five, has arms and legs, lives at home, and is a mouse. Apart from the last detail, it sounded very plausible! She had also drawn a picture, and when asked what one of the items was, she said "those are the consequences" - we're not even sure where she got that word! Normally Freya's a bit reluctant to leave creche if it's close to supper* time, but today I was nice and early. I got her out the front door, and then she dissolved in tears. I offered her a cuddle but she was cranky and continued to cry. We got in the car, and on the way home I said "Freya, if you're going to keep crying you will have to go into your room to calm down." We got out of the car, Freya still howling like a siren, and I asked her what she wanted to do. "Go to my room and cry!" was the answer, which she did. A few minutes later I came back to check on her and she was asleep on her bed! Poor tired girl.
Reb & I are both fairly exhausted too, after a big weekend last weekend, we didn't really have much of a rest. Lots of marking to do this weekend... bah.

And you call yourself a Doctor?
Freya was a bit unwell today so I took the day off to keep her at home. We went to the Drs in the morning for the usual poking & prodding which she is well used to. She had one of her drawings with her, and the doctor looked at it. "Is that a flower?" he asked. Freya was a bit shy, so she did not give the appropriate reply...
"FLOWER? IT'S A BUNNY! DON'T YOU HAVE TO BE SMART TO GO TO MEDICAL SCHOOL? YOU'RE ABOUT TO ASSESS MY HEALTH & YOU CAN'T TELL A FLOWER FROM A BUNNY! YOU'LL BE HEARING FROM MY LAWYER, QUACK!"
Maybe next time.

I am in need of a pep talk
After 4 consecutive periods of dross at Mt Doom SC today I am fairly over it... days like this I don't have much of a problem with trading in my principles for a job at an independent school where I would not have to suffer the blue collar organ bank spawn that clot up the public system.
Hopefully things will improve tomorrow. Too much mediocrity is sucking my will to live. Or at least teach.

Cool
The other day I spied an interesting looking old dresser out in the hard rubbish. It had been painted a hideous brown, and the top was covered in tacky ancient wood-patterned vinyl, but something about it caught my eye. I drove down one night to see if I could dismantle it and put it into the car, but it had been gruesomely nailed in a previous bodgy repair. However I noticed that it was well made, with dovetails on the backs of the drawers, and of sturdy hardwood construction. I noticed a maker's mark in one drawer.
Next morning I returned with some shovels and picks and implements of destruction, and proceeded to remove the mirror stand (mirror is absent) so that it fit in the car.
This weekend I got it into the shed, and started to strip off the vinyl, and then the paint & manky varnish. Reb and I spent a few hours at it today, and it is starting to look quite lovely. Then I googled the maker's name again, and found to my surprise that Tock & Co were owned by a Chinese immigrant who left Australia for Hong Kong in 1920 - so this piece must be the better part of 100 years old!

Really, really tasteless anecdote...
Today Freya was on the toilet and I was hoping for number 2s. I asked her if she was going to do a poo & she said no. I said "The poor surfers won't have anything to hit them in the face." Freya quickly responded "No! They'll have my wee!" We had a good chuckle.
Earlier today Freya sang a complete verse of the Spider Man song* (although today it was "Spider Nippies").
Tonight I went out and disturbed a possum on the back lawn, and it clambered up the nectarine tree to the first branch and sat there regarding me with its big possumy eyes. I'm fairly sure it was imagining what my flesh tastes like. It was still there a few minutes later, so I got Freya out of bed, as she wasn't yet asleep, and we went out and had a look at the big fluffy critter until he (pretty sure of that) climbed up the branch and wandered off. Nice that Boog got to see a live possum for a change!

It was still there a few minutes later, so I got Freya out of bed, as she wasn't yet asleep, and we went out and had a look at the big fluffy critter until he (pretty sure of that) climbed up the branch and wandered off. Nice that Boog got to see a live possum for a change!

The Holidays Part Deux
The school holidays are dead and buried now... but they were a good break and I got lots of stuff done around the house, and slightly less done in preparation for term 2.

Consolation spiders
I was chuffed to see a cute wee huntsman, just about 40 mm across, lurking around in the conservatory. It seemed to be rather keen on the black house spider webs, but I think it would have come off second best if it had met one of the full sized blackies...

Speaking of blackies... the one that lives above the auxilliary toilet door has reached full size, and is looking well mean. She even has a boyfriend now (click on pics for the full sized Flickr experioid):

Outside in under the verandah is another full-sized blackie, in a really fantastic rebuilt web.

Happy Holidays are here again W00T!
Easter has come & gone with the consumption of gross quantities of Lindt chocolate bunnies... very bad but I CAN'T RESIST THEIR SIREN CALL, especially now they are 50% off. We've had a couple of trips to the park, an easter egg hunt at Kate's and a road trip to Frankston to check out the sand sculpting before venturing further from civilization to have a squiz at Mt Doom S.C. and have lunch at one of the cafes down the road. In Frankston we foolishly bought "lattes" from a restaurant on the beach - they were toxic vile swill which resembled lattes, or even coffee, in only the loosest sense of the word. They also had a lot in common with raw sewage. Soooooo... we'll be going back there a lot in future. The cafe in Mt Doom was actually fairly nice in the scheme of things.

We actually had a decent rainfall last night... filled the water drum and one of the rubbish bins that I put under a downpipe.
Managed to read a book over the weekend - The Prefect, by Alistair Reynolds, which is a good read. Haven't had a huge amount of time to get much reading done during the term. Now I have just bought Iain Banks's latest, woo hoo!
Spent the first day of the holidays starting to clean up in advance of the arrival of Reb's folks in the coming months. Trying to flog a couple of things on ebay that were left over from the creche trash & treasure from a couple of weeks back. As usual the holidays are going to be a bit packed!
Picked up Freya about 2.30, and then we went on an epic shopping mish in Bentleigh, mainly epic due to the time dilating hell that is the local Coles. Freya was a really good helper, but she got a bit upset when I didn't want to get the "blue butter" that she wanted. She cried "I just wanted you to try it", which was really sad! So I got the blue butter instead & she was happy again. She was a bit tired and nutso this evening, but went to sleep with no fuss.
Was going to do some school work tonight... oh well.

We have finally joined the late 20th century...
We bought a DVD player this arvo.
Home with Freya again today, her mysterious lurgi is hanging about still. We decided to use the antibiotic prescription we were given the other day, as we are running out of explanations for Freya's temperature. It does seem to have made a difference.
Funny conversation at dinner. There was a vege sausage left on the plate and Freya said "That one is for Uncle Pete." We discussed whether the sausage would last that long. She said "Uncle Pete will come for dinner and eat the sausage and have lemonade, and he will say thankyou."

Teachers are revolting...
Went out on strike today and attended the union meeting & demonstration in the city, with a reasonable number of the balrogs from Mt Doom S.C. Was quite a neat experience really, with a slight sense of doing something a bit naughty, as well as being part of something which is trying to make something better, in this case Victoria's screwed up education system. I'm actually a bit ambivalent about a lot of unions, they seem to be interested in their members' interests and nothing more. The Australian Education Union does seem to be concerned about the education system.
That took up most of the day... got home after 4pm and quickly put up the side gate and vacced the floor before picking up Freya. She's recovered from the cold that kept her home the last couple of days, and had a good day. It was a 100% undies day - with no accidents! Very good chick.

And so it begins... again.
I have officially survived my second week of my second year at Mt Doom Secondary College. In fact it is going really well, I'm enjoying it SOOOOOOO much more than last year it's hard to describe. My classes are all quite good - I don't have anything as horrendous as my shocker from last year, which is now causing all sorts of psychic mayhem on a new bunch of victims. The Goblin Powered Vehicle team is slowly coming together as I get my head around the various aspects of it (mainly paperwork and more paperwork). Just struggling a wee bit at the moment to get skool stuff done along with various other commitments like Boog's upcoming birthday.
Assorted exciting things have happened lately... we upgraded the intarweb connection to a new naked DSL thingy with VOIP. Took about a trillion years to be set up and for the modem to arrive, the universe had actually ended and then started up again. We were stuck with dialup for a while. The package eventually arrived at skool, and I brought it home to set up. The setup CD was useless, it kept on telling me there was an IP address conflict when there were no other devices connected, so I had to "kick it old school" as the kids say, and set it up the old fashioned way, which was fine. The connection is now running at about 6 Mb/s instead of <256 kb/s that we used to have, which is a bit of an improvement! It is t3h r0xx0r indeed.
Our slum landlord has put the rent up on us again, apparently the cost of cardboard boxes has increased. That's the problem with living in a nice area where house prices are going up by about 40% every hour. The cost of a house in this area actually exceeds the GDP of Australia, and soon the weight of the cash will exceed the mass of the known universe.
We parted company with Sleipnir, the old Corolla, who was slowly decaying in the carport with a couple of poxy electrical problems we weren't keen to fix. We were just keen to shift it and recoup some of the money we had spent, so I think we may have sold it a bit cheaply considering the condition of the car. After a couple of nibbles a guy who lives locally had a look and was impressed enough to buy it immediately.
Blogging has been a bit of a struggle lately, especially when the internet was painfully slow. That is a tad slack of me considering that we had an awesome trip to NZ at Xmas, and then I have done some truly heroic DIY stuff during the holidays. I will blog about these soon!
Uncle Pete popped in briefly last week, and the difference in the way Freya interacted with him was HUGE! She was showing him her toys, running around the house yelling "Boo to you!" and getting cuddles.
More on the Freya front, the changes at the moment are just fantastic. Her language is great, and her memory for things like songs is often surprising. After we got back from NZ, one day she started singing a line from "Meet James Ensor", by They Might Be Giants. We hadn't listened to that for about a month! She has been really enjoying jigsaw puzzles, and after we got back we did them each day but it was a fairly frustrating process, although she enjoyed it. Now she is finishing some puzzles entirely on her own. They have been doing lots of counting at creche, and she's good at that too. The carers always seem to say really good things about her, which is nice (although I wonder if they say them to everyone...).
The toilet training, which was toddling along rather slowly, seems to be working. We tried the pull-up nappy/training pant thingies and they were fairly unsuccessful, they seemed to have some kind of magnetic attraction to urine. Within about three minutes of pulling one on Freya had flooded it with wee. With her normal nappies she would often keep them dry for ages before having a big wee on the toilet. A few times we had put Freya in undies, and initially there was much pant wetting and crying (and Freya was upset too), but lately that had been going fairly well for an hour or so, possibly because we are all a bit more focussed! Today we had her in undies almost all day, and it was a complete success. We reminded Freya to go to the toilet often, but she also asked a few times too.

Scrounge-tastic
The Gods of hard rubbish have smiled upon me lately, rewarding me with:
- two compost bins
- two nice, fairly new wooden chairs
- an old galvanised iron rubbish bin
- and a partridge in a pear tree.
